Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Ceist:

10 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Finance the arterial drainage work to be carried out in 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5333/99]

The following flood alleviation works are proposed for completion in 1999: Cappamore: First, the tree cutting and temporary fencing of phase two due for completion March 1999; Second, channel works from new bridge to the junction of the Glasha River excluding tributaries. It is also envisaged that some structures, for example, bridges may also be undertaken but these are not yet finalised. The estimated expenditure will be of the order of £2 million.

Carrick-on-Suir: The construction of walls and embankments to provide flood alleviation to the town of Carrick-on-Suir in accordance with local wishes; anticipated expenditure of £2 million.

Newport: completion of Newport – Ballymackeogh – scheme; estimated expenditure of £200,000. In addition to the above works it is envisaged that flood relief schemes will be proposed for public exhibition in Clonmel and Kilkenny by early summer of 1999. The proposed scheme for Carlow is expected to be ready for exhibition by the end of 1999. All these projects will be subject to local requirements and agreement.
