Vol. 501 No. 2

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

83 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has for the sale of Gormanstown military camp, County Meath; the position regarding the serving personnel there; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5007/99]

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

91 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Defence if any commercial or industrial proposals for the use of Gormanstown Aerodrome have been received or any approaches have been made to this Department in view of his direction to relocate the Air Corps unit in Gormanstown to Baldonnel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4862/99]

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

178 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence if any commercial or industrial proposals for the use of Gormanstown Aerodrome have been received or any approaches made to this Department in view of his direction to relocate the Air Corps unit in Gormanstown to Baldonnel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4918/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 83, 91 and 178 together.

The Government, on 15 July 1998, approved a programme of evacuation and sale of six military barracks which are considered surplus to requirements. There are no plans to close any barracks other than those announced on 15 July, 1998.

I am to add that an implementation plan is being prepared in line with the recommendations of the Price Waterhouse review of the Air Corps and the question of the relocation of the units and serving personnel in Gormanston will be addressed in the context of the implementation plan.

A number of proposals have been received from private concerns in relation to the use of Gormanston Aerodrome for aviation purposes. These proposals concern aviation policy generally and as such are a matter for consideration by the Minister for Public Enterprise. The question of the utilisation of the aerodrome for commercial or industrial purposes other than for aviation usage has not arisen.
