Vol. 501 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Eoin Ryan

Ceist:

118 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, the Government has to reach the 25 per cent recovery target for packaging waste by 2001; the number of tonnes this represents of plastic, composites, glass, steel, aluminium and wood; and the trend of recovery boards meeting the 2001 targets, that is, tonnages recovered in each of the years 1997 to 2000. [6398/99]

I refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 12, 16 and 55 of 28 January 1999 and Question No. 88 of 11 February 1999.

The weight of recyclables represented by Ireland's 25 per cent recovery target for 2001 depends on the weight of packaging waste generated in that year. Directive 94/62/EC does not require a pro rata recovery of individual materials within the packaging waste stream by 2001. However, the 2005 targets to be achieved by Ireland include a minimum recycling target of 15 per cent by weight for each packaging material.

In seeking the grant of approval for the purposes of the Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations, 1997, Repak Ltd. set itself the following indicative annual targets for the collection and recovery of packaging waste in the period to 2001.
