72 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Finance the proposals, if any, he has regarding taxation and credit union members' savings (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6485/99]
I set up a working group to examine the taxation of returns on credit union savings bearing in mind the special and particular nature of the credit union movement, its contribution to society and the wider taxation issues involved. The independent chairman presented the report of the working group to me on 1 October 1998. The report is a careful and complete examination of the issues concerning the taxation of credit unions. I am considering the report of the working group. However, I have come to no conclusions so far. Consequently, at this stage, I have no proposals to change the present taxation of credit unions members' savings.
