93 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of persons that have house purchase loans from local authorities. [6566/99]

The information requested is not available in my Department. However, details of the number of house purchase loans approved and paid by local authorities are published in my Department'sHousing Statistics Bulletins, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

92 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that some borrowers who have house purchase loans from local authorities are paying up to 12.5 per cent per annum on those loans; and the steps, if any, he will take to reduce the interest rates being charged to more realistic levels in view of the fact that mortgages can now be obtained where the interest rate charge is as low as 5 per cent. [6565/99]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Priority Question No. 5 of 28 January 1999.
