96 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the development proposals, if any, she has for the Royal Canal and the Grand Canal; the timescale envisaged for the proposals involved; the estimated costings; the amount included in her capital programme for 1999; and if she will make a statement on the matter. As the Deputy is aware, some £11.2 million was allocated for restoration and development of the canals under the EU Operational Programme for Tourism, 1994-1999 and £10.4 million has been spent to date. The balance of this funding and other Exchequer capital amounting to a total of £1.525 million is scheduled to be spent in 1999 as follows:
