Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Groceries Order.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

113 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of breaches of the Groceries Order, 1987, identified since its commencement; the number of complaints made regarding the order; the number of submissions she has received calling for abolition of the order; when these submissions were received; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6680/99]

The Restrictive Practices (Groceries) Order, 1987, is enforced by the Director of Consumer Affairs. I am informed by the director that ten cases have been investigated and a further three breaches of the order have been taken to court since the order's commencement. There have been over 60 complaints received by the Director of Consumer Affairs. I have received no submissions calling for the abolition of the order. The order is currently being reviewed by the competition and mergers review group whose final report I expect to receive later this year.
