Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Personnel.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

149 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Defence the decision, if any, made following a medical assessment by the Army medical board of a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6750/99]

The person in question has applied for a disability pension under the Army Pensions Acts. His application has been referred to the Army Pensions Board, which is the statutory body appointed under the Army Pensions Acts to investigate and report on such applications.

When the board has completed its consideration of the case and reported to my Department, the matter will be dealt with promptly and the applicant will be informed of the outcome without delay.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

150 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence if he will reconsider the decision in relation to a contract for a person (details supplied) in County Kildare who is a member of the Defence Forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6991/99]

The military authorities advise that the papers in regard to the question of the extension of service of the individual concerned have not yet been submitted to the Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) for his decision. The criteria for extension in service for such personnel are as prescribed in Defence Force regulations. These criteria include medical suitability. If the person concerned fulfils the relevant conditions his extension in service may be authorised in accordance with the regulations. These regulations are of general application and exceptions cannot be made in individual cases. In the case under query, the military authorities advise that it is hoped to have a decision on the matter in the near future.
