Vol. 502 No. 1

Written Answers. - Waste Recycling.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

147 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the only free paper recycling scheme in Dun Laoghaire is run by a supermarket; the plans, if any, he has to deter the use of landfills and to encourage the provision and use of paper recycling facilities through appropriate and enforceable legislation in view of the fact Ireland is the second worst recycler in the EU, the increasing public concern for sustainable development and the fall in wood pulp prices. [7276/99]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 289 of 25 February 1999.

As outlined in the policy statement Changing our Ways, overall Government policy on waste management is committed to a dramatic reduction in reliance on landfill, in favour of an integrated waste management approach which will deliver ambitious waste recycling and recovery targets. My Department has already put a number of measures in train in support of this broad objective, and will seek further to develop such initiatives on an ongoing basis.
