180 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí to be deployed at the proposed new Garda station in Leixlip, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7404/99]
The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the current personnel strength of Leixlip station as of 3 March 1999 is two sergeants, 14 gardaí and two detective gardaí.
The Garda authorities have further informed me that the Office of Public Works is actively negotiating with Kildare County Council with a view to providing a site for a city type station for Leixlip. When these negotiations are completed, the personnel strength at the proposed new station will be fully considered in the overall context of the needs of other Garda stations throughout the country.
181 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the strength of the Garda Siochána in each station in north Kildare with particular reference to Naas, Clane, Kilcock, Maynooth, Leixlip and Celbridge; the strength increases required in respect of each station; the plans, if any, he has in regard to meeting this requirement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. For operational reasons, the Garda Commissioner is not in favour of releasing details of individual station strengths as requested by the Deputy and I share that concern.
However, the Garda authorities have informed me that Clane, Maynooth and Celbridge are station's within the Naas District which has a total personnel strength of 110, all ranks. Kilcock is a station within the Ashbourne district which has a total personnel strength of 68, all ranks. Leixlip is a station within the Lucan District which has a total personnel strength of 138, all ranks.
The Garda authorities have further informed me that the situation will be kept under review, and when additional personnel next become available, the needs of all the stations referred to in the question will be fully considered in the overall context of the needs of other Garda stations throughout the country.
