Vol. 502 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

86 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will report on the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 who is awaiting a heart by-pass and alleges he has been informed his operation cannot take place due to Government cutbacks but can have the operation this week if £17,000 can be raised; if the consultant confirms he gave this information; if it is correct; if the consultant knew or should have known the position; his views on whether it is fair to ask a working class family without VHI cover to raise £17,000; the action, if any, he will take against the consultant; and if he will arrange the by-pass as soon as possible as a public patient. [7559/99]

The Deputy will appreciate that the questions he has raised are a matter for the management of the Mater Hospital and the clinician involved, in the first instance. Therefore, I have asked the chief executive officer of the hospital to investigate the matter and to respond directly to the Deputy as a matter of urgency.
