Written Answers. - Guidance Counselling.

John Perry

Ceist:

312 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give details of the postgraduate diploma courses in guidance counselling whose participants can qualify for recognition as guidance counsellors in post primary schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8778/99]

The appointment of designated guidance counsellors in post primary schools is sanctioned subject to their being eligible for a teaching post in the post primary sector and to their holding satisfactory qualifications in guidance counselling.

My Department recognises the following courses as providing an appropriate training for guidance counsellors: Higher Diploma in Careers Guidance, University College Dublin, NUI Dublin; Higher Diploma in Guidance and Counselling, University College Cork, NUI Cork; Master of Education in Guidance and Counselling, Trinity College, Dublin; Higher Diploma in School Guidance and Counselling, NUI Maynooth; Master of Science in Family Counselling/Master's Degree in Family Counselling [when additional module in school guidance has been completed] Marino Institute of Education-Iona College and Graduate Diploma in Guidance Counselling, University of Limerick, with a further outreach course in Carrick-on-Shannon Education Centre.
