Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Millennium Projects.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

67 Mr. Haughey asked the Taoiseach the way in which the proposed millennium spire in O'Connell Street, Dublin 1, will be funded; if State funding will be provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8747/99]

The National Millennium Committee which is chaired by the Government Chief Whip and Minister of State, Deputy Seamus Brennan, is to advise on project proposals of national significance for inclusion in the Government's millennium programme and also to recommend a system for supporting community, local, county or regional projects which will provide an opportunity for local communities, including in areas of social disadvantage, to participate in the millennium commemoration.

The millennium committee has not received a proposal in respect of Dublin Corporation's plan for a spire for O'Connell Street. Dublin Corporation has submitted a plan for the integrated development of the O'Connell Street area for consideration for funding as a millennium project. This proposal is currently under consideration by the millennium committee in the context of its mandate.
