Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tax Reliefs.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

318 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Finance the claims for income tax relief covered by the £13,000 allowance for old age pensioners; and if this includes provision for variable medical insurance such as VHI (details supplied). [10309/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that for the current tax year there is a total exemption from income tax for married couples who are aged 65 or over and whose income for the year does not exceed £13,000. As no tax is payable the usual allowances and reliefs, including medical insurance relief, are discounted as these would only become relevant where there was a liability to tax.

I am further informed that, according to the most recent information available to the inspector of taxes, the income of the taxpayer in question is not expected to exceed £13,000 in the current tax year. Consequently, the total exemption from income tax will apply.
