Ceist:

378 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will give an update on the position at the Tallaght Hospital and progress achieved to date. [10362/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 357 and 378 together.

I am satisfied that the situation at the hospital has now stabilised. The troika which I appointed to put the hospital on a firm footing is making significant progress and is working well with the board of the hospital and the senior management.

The hospital has submitted to the Department its 1999 Service Plan within budget, a very experienced and competent interim chief executive officer has been installed at the hospital, and satisfactory progress to date has been made in implementing the recommendations of the Deloitte & Touche report.

Progress has also been made in the area of industrial relations and the recruitment process for a new chief executive officer is well advanced. Services at the hospital have continued uninterrupted. In-patient and out-patient activities are running marginally ahead of planned activity levels for the three months to the end of March.

Much work remains to be done to establish the hospital but I am confident that this will be achieved and the progress to date will continue.
