Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

466 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if more Garda attention will be given to an estate (details supplied) in Dublin 5 in view of the number of burglaries and cars stolen in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9637/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the area to which the Deputy refers consists of approximately 130 private houses and while the gardaí have recorded a few incidents in the area, they do not consider that it has a major crime problem. I understand that young people living in the area attract people of their own age to the estate and the provisions of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1990, are being used to prevent large numbers of youths gathering in the estate. I am also informed that the estate has a very active neighbourhood watch scheme, which works closely with the Garda. The area is being patrolled by a community garda assigned to the area, and mobile units, both plain clothes and uniform, are also paying regular attention to the estate. I am assured by the Garda authorities that the area will continue to receive the appropriate garda attention.
