Vol. 503 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bovine Diseases.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

78 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the procedure followed when an animal identified with tuberculosis or brucellosis arrives at a slaughter premises; the way in which the meat carcasses are disposed of; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10907/99]

Once a reactor has been identified as such on a farm the herd is restricted and the animal is given additional identification. Slaughter premises tender for reactor animals on a weekly basis. Animals are removed under permit from farms and transported to the meat plant by the reactor collection service.

On arrival at the slaughter premises, these animals are marshalled and slaughtered separately. They are subjected to detailed ante and post-mortem examination and if appropriate certification by Department veterinary inspectors in accordance with EU legislation relating to health matters affecting intra-community trade in meat.

Certified meat only can be placed on the market.
