Vol. 503 No. 7

Written Answers. - Food Industry.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

90 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the proposals, if any, he has to expand the food industry with particular reference to the need to increase exports in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11173/99]

The food industry development group, which was established under the aegis of my Department, has set out a proposed action plan for the future development of the industry. The group's report places emphasis on market orientation and competitiveness. While opportunities are foreseen in all market segments, the group considers that the added-value consumer foods and food ingredients sectors offer particularly strong growth prospects. The group stresses that future development must be underpinned by continuing attention to food safety and quality issues. On the particular issue of exports, An Bord Bia has developed a strategy to develop new market opportunities and this is reflected in the group's report.

The report of the food industry development group is receiving consideration in the discussions on the new National Development Plan and the next round of structural funds.
