Vol. 504 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sports Promotion.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

26 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the proposals, if any, he has to promote swimming as a sport; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11774/99]

The promotion of a sport is primarily a matter for the particular national governing body. In this case, the governing bodies concerned are the newly constituted Swim Ireland and the Irish Schools Swimming Association. I have recently received a report of the first AGM from Swim Ireland and I am now considering its contents, having particular regard to the findings and recommendations in the report on the inquiry conducted by Mr. Roderick Murphy, SC. Both myself and the new body agree with the need for a restructuring of the organisation of swimming in a democratic manner and the importance of its members being satisfied with the new procedures and arrangements relating to the safety of the younger members of the sport. I will be discussing its report with Swim Ireland in the near future and also the question of future funding towards the work of the new body.

The local authorities, who are the main providers of the facilities for those who participate in this sport, through the provision of access for recreational swimming and for training and coaching programmes, also play an important role in the promotion of this sport.
