137 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the role the traffic wardens will have in the introduction and development of the community warden service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13407/99]
The community warden service which I propose to establish will focus generally on improving liaison between the local authority and the community and particularly on enhancing the environment through better enforcement of a range of regulatory functions for which the local authorities are responsible, identifying measures for environmental improvement and so on. I intend to develop the proposal further in consultation with the local authorities, at which stage the role and functions of all relevant existing employees in implementing the new service will be considered.
