Vol. 505 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cancer Screening Programme.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

33 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Health and Children the results of the review his Department requested health boards to undertake of the results of cervical smear tests arising from the incorrect reporting of the results of a number of tests; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13962/99]

The result of the review carried out by Beaumont hospital is that of the 198 slides reviewed, 13 slides which were reported by Claymon as negative are now regarded as positive. Eleven were inadequate/borderline, one was C1N1 and one C1N2. Beaumont hospital has been in contact with the doctors responsible for the 13 patients and has been informed that these doctors are taking appropriate action. A further six discrepant cases were reported as negative by Claymon, more recent follow-up smear results were available. In five of these cases the follow-up smears were negative and one case was classified as C1N3. The patient was referred for colposcopy.

In relation to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital the results of the review indicate that there is a change in status in one case. As a final check a team comprising two pathologists, an obstetrician and a public health doctor is going through everything again. This report will be available shortly.

The position in the other six hospitals to which the cytotechnicians were attached is that their work is being reviewed and contact is continuing with these hospitals in the matter.
