Vol. 507 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

300 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science the level of resource teaching recently provided to two pupils in St. Brigid's national school, Glasnevin, Dublin 9; if this is typical of the hours provided for other schools; if he will increase this level; if he has a programme for increase over the next few years; and his views on the eight or nine other pupils in the school with behavioural problems who need resource teaching service. [16692/99]

My Department originally sanctioned an allocation of six hours per week special resource teaching support for two specific pupils attending the school in question. This level of support was based on the needs of the two pupils concerned and would be typical of the level of support granted in such situations.

However, I am pleased to inform the Deputy that following a more comprehensive review of special needs among children attending the school in question and adjacent schools, my Department has now sanctioned a full-time resource teacher to be based in St. Brigid's national school. The resource teacher will cater for special needs children attending St. Brigid's and also children with special needs attending two other schools in the area.
