The National Rehabilitation Board provides auditory trainers – infants radio aids – on loan for children of pre-school age.
I have had inquiries made of the NRB. I understand that the individual mentioned in the Deputy's question was fitted with new hearing aids and ear moulds on 14 May 1999. The audiologist attending the individual concerned noted a request for an auditory trainer. An auditory trainer is on order and delivery is expected shortly at which time the individual in question will be called for fitting.
Responsibility for the provision of radio aids for children at school rests with my colleague the Minister for Education and Science. I understand that radio aids for school children are provided on the recommendation of a visiting teacher of the deaf, and on the approval of the relevant school inspector. These aids are supplied and fitted by the NRB on the instruction of the Department of Education and Science in each instance.
