Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

John Gormley

Ceist:

783 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received correspondence from a person (details supplied) in County Kerry in relation to height restrictions for persons wishing to join the Garda Síochána; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18267/99]

I am aware of the correspondence to which the Deputy refers.

The height requirements for entry to the Garda Síochána are prescribed by regulation and are currently under review. Until that review is completed I am not in a position to say what changes, if any, will be made to the relevant regulations. Any proposals I may have in this regard will be submitted for consideration by the Government in due course.

The height requirements will remain unchanged for the purposes of the Garda recruitment competition which was advertised during the summer.

Ceist:

784 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he can confirm that 98 per cent of all European Union police forces have a lesser height requirement than the Irish police force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18268/99]

It is understood that four EU countries have no height requirements for entry to their police forces and a further eight have lower height requirements than the Irish police force. One country has higher height requirements for both male and female candidates and in the remaining country the height requirement for males is lower, whereas the requirement for females is higher.
