Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

821 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposed timescale for the construction and opening of Knocklyon post primary school; and when teachers will be recruited for the school. [17542/99]

My Department recently received the Stage 4/5 submission, that is, detailed design and bill of quantities for the new post primary school at Knocklyon, Dublin 16. The design team is currently undertaking the pre-selection of contractors for the proposed development. It is hoped to have a contractor on site before the end of the year and that the accommodation will be open for operation by September 2000.

The principal of a new "greenfield" second level school may be appointed up to six months in advance of the scheduled date of opening of the school.
When the new principal is appointed in this case, my Department will discuss and agree with him/her the appropriate teacher allocation for the forthcoming school year having regard to the projected enrolments and the curricular needs of the students. The selection and appointment of teachers within the approved allocation will then be a matter for the authorities of the school.
This project continues to receive priority attention within my Department.
