Vol. 508 No. 3

Written Answers - National College of Ireland.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

356 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the matter of the National College of Ireland and its proposals for a multi-million pound campus in the docklands area of Dublin for which departmental funding assistance has been sought; if the negative comments reported in the media have misrepresented his Department's views on the viability of the project; and when a formal determination on the application will be made. [18618/99]

A revised proposal has recently been submitted to my Department by the National College of Ireland in relation to its proposed new campus in the Dublin Docklands. This proposal is currently under active consideration. This process must be completed before a decision regarding the request for funding can be made.

Access to documentation concerning the proposed move by the National College of Ireland to the docklands was granted under the Freedom of Information Act, 1997. Some of the documentation contained details of the concerns of my Department in relation to the College's original proposal. Various media subsequently carried a range of reports on this matter. I am satisfied that the National College of Ireland is aware of my Department's concerns in relation to their original proposal.
