Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Strategy on Road Safety.

John Bruton

Ceist:

278 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will look at the merits of installing speed cameras close to schools in Meath and elsewhere where there are known speeding problems, grave dangers are faced by pupils and parents from reckless speeding vehicles and all the usual speed signs, school signs and flashing lights have failed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19462/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, as part of the national strategy on road safety, automated speed cameras will be installed shortly in the Louth-Meath division on a pilot basis.

As the Deputy will appreciate, the location of these cameras will be based on operational decisions taken by the Garda authorities and neither I nor my Department has a role in relation to these decisions. However, I can assure the Deputy that his proposal regarding the actual sitting of automated cameras has been brought to the attention of the Garda authorities.

I can also inform the Deputy that following a review of the Louth-Meath pilot programme, automated speed detection cameras will be installed at various locations throughout the State as part of the enforcement measures set out in the National Strategy on Road Safety.
