Vol. 509 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

17 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Education and Science when his Department will approve the plans for an extra classroom for Kealkil national school, County Cork; and when work will commence. [20101/99]

Architectural planning for the provision of a one classroom extension and library/ medical/resource room at Kealkil national school is at an advanced stage. The plans have already been approved by my Department and it is understood that these were submitted by the school's architect to the planning authority on 15 July. Planning permission is awaited. My Department also understands that additional information has been sought in respect of the fire certificate application and that this is being submitted to the local authority this week.

The board of management applied for renovations to this school in 1996 but due to financial constraints it was not possible to approve of the work. The Deputy will be aware that I have almost doubled the capital provision for primary schools since then and while it is too early to say when work will commence, I can assure the Deputy, that this project will be processed as quickly as possible through the remaining stages of the architectural planning process.
