Vol. 509 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

29 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of leaving certificate students who received upgrades following re-checks of the 1999 leaving certificate results; the number of students who received improved offers from the Central Applications Office; if these students who received improved offers have been accommodated in the current academic year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19994/99]

In 1999 the leaving certificate examination culminated in the issue of 429,000 grades. As a result of the appeal process there have been 1857 grade changes which represents less than half of one per cent of the total.

In relation to course offers every effort is made by third level colleges to ensure that all candidates who qualify for a particular course as a result of an upgrade are facilitated in taking up that course and the experience is that students entitled to a revised offer are accommodated.

The actual process of making revised course offers is a matter for the colleges and the CAO as distinct from the Department. Consequently the precise statistical information requested by the Deputy is not normally available to my Department.
