34 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress, if any, he has made in the past year in upgrading science facilities in second level schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19998/99]
In November 1998 I commissioned a national survey to ascertain the overall condition of science facilities in second level schools. The results of the survey have been assessed and I announced in March of this year my intention of undertaking a major investment in modernising school science laboratories.
In this context, I am considering a range of options to determine the most appropriate strategy for expending £13 million in science facilities over the next three years.
I would also point out to the Deputy that capital funding is provided from the annual second level capital allocation for the refurbishment of science laboratories undertaken as part of an overall refurbishment of a second level school.
Additionally, I have already provided a grant for class materials and basic general equipment for practical work for students studying physics, chemistry, and physics and chemistry at leaving certificate level. This will be an annual grant.
