512 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons arrested and released without charge in each of the past three years; the number charged but not convicted; the number charged and convicted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21034/99]
I refer to my answer – No. 85 – to the Deputy on 12 October 1999 on this matter. The Garda authorities have informed me that the statistics requested by the Deputy are not readily available and could only be obtained by the use of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources. It would, in fact, involve an inquiry to every Garda station in the country.
