616 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a design team for St. Catherine's national school, Aughrim, Ballinasloe, County Galway. [21465/99]

An application has been received from the manager of St. Catherine's national school, Aughrim, County Galway for grant-aid towards additional accommodation and improvement works to the school.

My Department's planning and building unit is currently reviewing the long-term accommodation requirements of the school and will be in touch with the board of management as soon as possible.

Ceist:

617 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science when his Department changed its policy on post primary rationalisation following the recent announcement concerning post primary education in County Leitrim; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21494/99]

The announcement referred to by the Deputy concerns my Department's decision to provide a replacement school in County Leitrim.

On examination of accommodation at the school in question, my Department had considered the question of rationalisation of both second level schools in the area.

However, following an inspection of one of the school buildings, a replacement building was considered a matter of urgency on the grounds of health and safety. It was decided that given this urgency and the general protracted nature of negotiations surrounding rationalisation that a replacement of this school building should proceed immediately. However, the site for the new school building was thought to be sufficiently large to accommodate an extension to facilitate rationalisation if agreed in the future.
This development is not a change in my Department's rationalisation policy but rather addresses the urgent accommodation needs of a school at this time. The issue of rationalisation can and most likely will be raised again in this case.
