Ceist:

127 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, further to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 35 and 38 of 2 November 1999, he will make a statement on the apparent contradiction regarding when the Government's request to the Government of Pakistan to approve the appointment of a new honorary consul was made. [22739/99]

Ceist:

128 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs when the Irish ambassador interviewed the candidates for the post of honorary consul to Pakistan; when he submitted his report to his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22740/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 126, 127 and 128 together.

I received representations on behalf of three of the persons considered for the post of honorary consul in Pakistan other than those mentioned in question number (22738/99). Two of them were from companies in Ireland and one was from a lawyer in Pakistan.

The Irish Government's request to the Government of Pakistan for approval for the appointment of a new honorary consul of Ireland in Karachi was presented on 6 October 1999. In my reply to Question No. 38 on 2 November I should have said that the formal request was presented "early in October 1999".

The ambassador interviewed persons interested in the position on 1, 2 and 3 February, 7 June and 18 and 19 August 1999. Reports were submitted to the Department by the ambassador on 20 February, 15 June and 22 August 1999 in which he indicated that he regarded two of the people interviewed as being suitable for the position but that he had a preference for one individual. On the basis of those reports the Department advised me that they thought that either of the two people concerned would make a good honorary consul. I decided on the one who, in my view, was the better.
