Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

233 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received the report of the review of the sexual assault treatment unit at the Rotunda Hospital; and, if so, if the report will be published. [22155/99]

I have had inquiries made of the Rotunda Hospital concerning this issue. The hospital has confirmed that no recent review of the sexual assault treatment unit has been undertaken. I understand, however, that a review was undertaken by the hospital in consultation with the Department of Health in 1994 following which a series of measures were put in place to enhance services at the unit.

The hospital has indicated that they will gladly make available to the Deputy, on request, any information concerning the unit.

Ceist:

234 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on the recent reports that obstetrics fees are poised to be increased dramatically due to the deteriorating medico/legal climate in Ireland. [22156/99]

The growth in the cost of dealing with claims arising from medical negligence is a matter of great concern. This year has already seen a steep increase in the cost of indemnity cover for obstetricians from one of the medical defence organisations. I am not aware, at this stage, of any further increase.
