Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Working Time Directive.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

245 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposal in the European Parliament to introduce a transitional 56 hour working week in the European Union which will eventually lead to a 48 hour week for non-consultant hospital doctors; and if reports that Ireland will veto these proposals at Council of Ministers level are correct. [22249/99]

The common position adopted by the EU Labour and Social Affairs Council in May on the proposed Working Time Directive is presently under consideration by the European Parliament. Until such time as a resolution is adopted by the Parliament it would be premature to speculate on what position Ireland or other member states will adopt at the Council.

Ireland is committed to the introduction of a 48 hour week for hospital doctors in the shortest period possible which is compatible with the interests of patients and does not damage the long-term career prospects of young doctors.

Proposals likely to emanate from the Medical Manpower Forum should also be helpful in improving the career prospects of hospital doctors strengthening medical teams, particularly outside of normal hours.
