Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

255 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the new legislation, if any, he proposes to introduce governing the medical practice; and if he proposes to introduce revalidation on a compulsory footing to replace the voluntary system which exists in view of the fact that doctors are responsible for people's lives. [22265/99]

There has been a generally favourable response to the Medical Council's discussion paper on revalidation as a prerequisite to remaining on the permanent register of medical practitioners. The present Medical Practitioners Act does not have any provision which would allow for the introduction of revalidation. I hope to include such a provision in an amended Act in the near future.
