Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

385 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if his attention has been drawn to the ongoing dispute between an organisation (details supplied) and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council regarding community involvement in the running of a swimming pool; the plans, if any, he has to support the release of public funds for the refurbishment of the pool before the dispute is settled; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22306/99]

I am not aware of any dispute between Glenalbyn Athletic and Social Federation and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council regarding community involvement in the running of Glenalbyn swimming pool which in any event is a matter for the parties concerned.

There is no proposal to refurbish Glenalbyn swimming pool in my Department at present. In the event of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council submitting a proposal to refurbish the pool, it will be considered along with other such proposals on hands in my Department, having regard to such matters as: the need for a swimming pool in an area; suitability of the proposed site; future viability of the project, particularly in relation to operational and maintenance issues; construction and operating standards of existing facilities; satisfactory financial plan; and the need to achieve an equitable geographical spread of funds.
