Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

404 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will address concerns over class sizes at the Holy Family national school, Rathcoole, County Dublin, in the context of Government commitments on class sizes; and if the school has been examined and approved for remedial action. [22579/99]

The staffing of primary schools is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with guidelines agreed between this Department and the education partners.

The staffing of the school referred to by the Deputy for the 1999-2000 school year is a principal plus six mainstream class teachers and a remedial teacher based on the September 1998 enrolment of 206.

Based on the September 1999 enrolment of 191, the pupil teacher ratio for the current school year is 27.28:1. It is the responsibility of the board of management of the school to ensure that class sizes in the school are arranged in such a way as to maximise the resources available.
