Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

406 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if arrangements will be made to facilitate persons (details supplied) in County Kilkenny in view of the medical evidence submitted to his Department on 17 September 1999 and the nature of the case as detailed in representations in support of an appeal against the decision of his Department to refuse school transport. [22600/99]

The question of the provision of school transport in this case has been reviewed in the light of the representations and medical evidence forwarded by the Deputy. The position remains, however, that as this child resides 1.5 miles from her national school she is ineligible for transport under the terms of the school transport scheme. It is also not possible to facilitate her on a concessionary fare-paying basis as the 2 p.m. service from the school does not operate to her home area. Special transport arrangements or extensions of existing services may not be allowed for basically ineligible pupils, as is the case with this child. I regret my Department is not in a position to facilitate the child in question.
