Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - Electronic Voting.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

59 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the report, if any, he has received on the trials of the new electronic voting system carried out at the Dublin South Central by-election; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23301/99]

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

310 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make a statement on the experimental computerised voting which took place during the recent by-election in Dublin South Central. [23586/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 59 and 310 together.

Electors of all ages who used the voting machine at the trial on the day of the recent by-election generally expressed a positive attitude to the use of the machine in place of the traditional ballot paper. Many of the electors displayed interest in the system asking about details of its operation and the subsequent method of vote counting.
