Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

113 Ms Coughlan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if the additional ten years pensionable salary sanctioned by the Department of Finance in 1986 will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Donegal; and, if not, the reasons in this regard. [23541/99]

Additional years service for the calculation of pension are allowed to certain civil servants who, by virtue of the qualifications and experience required for their post, would not have the 40 years pensionable service at the age of 65. This entitlement can be reduced by reference to the value of preserved benefits and refunds from other pension schemes.

In the case in question, the person to whom the question relates was credited with an entitlement of ten years additional service, on the basis of an estimation of the time required to attain his qualifications. However, the entitlement was subsequently reduced when the benefits and refunds from other pension schemes were taken into account.

The method of the calculation of the amount of the final award has been reviewed by my Department, in conjunction with the Department of Finance, and confirmed to be correct. The facts relating to the calculation have been outlined in detail to the person concerned.
