Vol. 511 No. 2

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

65 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will examine the situation in relation to work permits or the right to work of students from non-EU countries studying here and paying full university fees; if she will relax the laws and allow these students to work either during holiday periods or in employment relevant to their studies where practical experience is essential and where they currently are at a disadvantage to EU students who can gain valuable practical experience; and her views on whether the current system is fair in view of the fact it takes weeks to implement and forces students to leave the country for six weeks before the permit is granted. [23971/99]

My Department have agreed, in conjunction with the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, that students are entitled to take up employment, whether paid or not, where such employment forms an integral part of a bona fide course of education, including professional education.
