Regarding the earlier production of transcripts of court hearings, I am informed that the chief executive officer of the Court Service has established a working group to examine ways to improve the stenography service in the short, medium and long-term. This group is expected to make its first report to the chief executive officer in the coming weeks.
I understand arrangements have been made by the courts service that the Chief State Solicitor's office will notify the office of the Court of Criminal Appeal in writing in cases where the transcript is urgently required and the court office will notify the Chief State Solicitor's office immediately the transcripts become available.
I am informed that there is a shortage of stenographers in the courts because of the difficulty in recruiting persons with the necessary experience and skills. I understand that the Civil Service Commission is currently running a competition for the recruitment of stenographers and it is hoped that their numbers will be augmented soon.
