Vol. 512 No. 3

Written Answers - Nuclear Plants.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

51 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if the RPII has reported to her on its recent meeting with the British Nuclear Installations Inspectorate over the falsification of quality control checks on nuclear fuel rods; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26008/99]

The falsification of quality control checks on nuclear fuel pellets was discussed at a meeting last month between the RPII and the UK Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, NII

The NII's investigation into this incident, which I referred to in my response to Parliamentary Question No. 61 on 3 November 1999, is continuing. I understand that British Nuclear Fuels has now modified its quality control procedures to prevent any recurrence of such an incident. BNFL has also taken disciplinary action against those involved. I understand also that the fuel pellet manufacturing plant has been shut down and will remain so until the NII is satisfied that the proper procedures are in place and revised safety arrangements have been submitted and accepted by the NII. I reiterate that, while this incident had no implications for safety at the Sellafield plant, the falsification of any data relating to such hazardous material is a matter of serious concern.
