Vol. 512 No. 8

Written Answers. - Irish Language.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

99 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the action, if any, she has taken to obtain the agreement of the European Union to have Irish recognised as an official language of the EU; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [27311/99]

As I have explained in response to previous questions on this subject every suitable opportunity is being and will be availed of to promote the status of the Irish language in the European Union including its recognition as an official language. The Deputy will be aware that this is a matter which will be dealt with in accordance with paragraph 3.209 of the White Paper on Foreign Policy.
