Vol. 512 No. 8

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

124 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science if entitlement to a maintenance grant for attendance at a degree course for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford will be reviewed in view of the fact that her tutor has submitted written data stating that the particular course she is currently participating in is the first year of a MA degree course. [27336/99]

I understand that the student to whom the Deputy refers applied to Wexford County Council for a higher education grant in respect of a course being pursued at National University of Ireland, Galway. Wexford County Council turned down the application on the basis that it was not an approved postgraduate course for the purpose of the higher education grant scheme.

My Department subsequently confirmed the decision taken by Wexford County Council in this case.

Information has now been submitted to the Department by the college authorities in relation to the status of the course. The application is being reviewed in the light of this information, and further clarification has been sought in this regard.

My Department will revert to the Deputy as soon as this review is completed.
