Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Compensation Scheme.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

466 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children his proposals for the introduction of a no fault compensation scheme to replace civil proceedings for damages in circumstances in which it is alleged a baby suffered injury at birth. [1786/00]

The question of introducing a no fault compensation scheme for infants alleged to have been injured at or around the time of birth is one option being considered by the Government as part of a set of measures to control the increasing cost of obtaining medical indemnity cover for obstetricians. The Government has asked that the implications of introducing such a scheme in Ireland be studied.
