Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

119 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to allocate additional funding to Roscommon County Council to rise roads which were flooded over the Christmas period due to excessive flooding in the Shannon basin in view of the fact that many families were left isolated without access to or from their villages; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2126/00]

The funds available to local authorities from State grants and local resources for non-national road maintenance and improvement are in principle designed to cover contingencies arising from flooding, storm damage and other severe weather conditions. In determining grants next week to local authorities for the 2000 non-national roads programme, I will ensure that the increased resources available will equip all authorities appropriately in relation to their ongoing and special needs. Non-national road grants to Roscommon County Council have been significantly increased in recent years and, in 1999, stood at some £7.9 million.
