John Gormley

Ceist:

157 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons arrested, detained past 48 hours and charged under the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act, 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2038/00]

I am informed by the Garda Authorities that in the time available it has not been possible to assemble the information requested. As soon as the information is available I will forward the details to the Deputy.

John Gormley

Ceist:

158 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons arrested and charged under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2039/00]

The number of arrests under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, in each of the years 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 were 937, 1395, 1168 and 888, respectively. The provisional figure for the first ten months of 1999 is 740 – full year figures are not yet available.

I am informed by the Garda Authorities that statistics relating to the number of persons arrested under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, and who were subsequently charged are not readily available and would have to be compiled specially at the cost of a disproportionate amount of Garda resources.
