204 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of armed robberies in 1999; the comparison figure in each of the years 1994, 1989 and 1984; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2678/00]
I am informed by the Garda authorities that while the statistics for 1999 have not yet been published, provisional statistics for that year indicate that 133 cases were reported or known by the Garda.
I should emphasise that the figures for 1999 are provisional and subject to change as Garda investigations progress. The annual report of the Garda Síochána will contain the final figures in respect of 1999 when it is published later in the year. The number of armed robberies in the years 1994, 1989 and 1984 were as follows; 1994 – 179; 1989 – 79; 1984 – 79.
